Determine the week of manufacture. The two numbers at the beginning of the date code are the week of the year the tire was made. This number will range from 01 to 52.

For example the manufacture code of 237 means the tire was made in the 23rd week of the year because the 23 represents the week. These last four digits of the DOT code represent the manufacture date of the tire. The last two digits refer to the year the tire was produced and the first two digits identify the week number within that year.

The tire shown in Figure 1 was manufactured on the 36th week of the year 2001. That tire was on a trailer that had been sitting in a field unused for 10 years and it showed signs of dry-rot cracking. Just as after the Serial Number that is the DOT Serial Number or Serial Number on the Sidewall you will view with the 4 digit number which indicates Week and Manufacturing Month and Year Month of Tire.

This is quite a lot helpful for you to have a complete set of information. The first pair of these four numbers identifies the date of manufacture down to the nearest week which range from 01 to 53. The last pair of numbers specifies the year of manufacture.

The tire aging process happens regardless of whether a tire is on a vehicle or in a temperature-controlled room. Most tires begin to significantly degrade around five years from the date of manufacture. Six years from the date of manufacture most tires are no longer safe for use on a vehicle.

Expired Tires are a Hidden Hazard. While most tires you deal with will probably be manufactured after 2000 there are some rare circumstances such as vintage cars where the tires may have been manufactured before the year 2000. In this case there will only be three digits at the end of the DOT code.
